Antique Sampler, 1821, by Susanna Farrow. The sampler is worked in silk on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, copper, gold, silver, dark brown and blue. Verse entitled 'WISDOM' reads, 'One thing I ask; and wilt thou hear, And grant my soul a gift so dear? Wisdom descending from above; The choicest token of thy love. PRUDENCE'. Signed and dated 'Susanna Farrow Hogsthorpe Finished This Work June-22nd 1821 Aged 15 Years.''. Placename Hogsthorpe is a small village in Lincolnshire, England. A wonderful set of motifs, including a well dressed female figure holding a rope, a stag, dogs, flowers, potted flowering plants, fir trees, birds and lions. Framed in a 20thC Hogarth frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is loose mounted onto a linen backing. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Origin: England Period: 19th Century Condition: Good. Generally Good. A number of holes, masked by the linen backing. Slight darkening of the ground in the top left corner. A loose thread, by one plant pot. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
