Description
Full of sunlight and brilliant color, this scene of swimmers and boaters cavorting and sunning among the large boulders along the edge of Wingaersheek Beach in Cape Ann, on the north shore of Boston, is an important depiction of 1930s life in America. A statuesque female swimmer, with her swim cap and form-fitting blue suit, looks into the distance, flanked by men and women with their feet in the water and their bodies tanned from the sun. In the distance, a group of sailboats are racing through the water, and the brilliant blue sky is crowded with cumulus and cirrus clouds. This painting was exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Century Club in New York in 1944. The painter was Allyn Cox, son of the famous muralist Kenyon Cox, famous in his own right for executing an ambitious set of murals for the U.S. Capitol Building. The painting is oil on canvas, and was beautifully framed recently.
