Andreas Wachter was born in Chemnitz in 1951. He studied under Volker Stelzmann and Arno Rink at the Hochschule für Graphik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Italy became a constant travel destination and source of inspiration for his artistic work. In addition to the landscape, the omnipresent influence of antiquity and the Renaissance in Italian cities is essential to Wachter's oeuvre. European art history plays a major role in his works, some of which are described as "old masterly paintings". Some of the figures appear to be quotes from paintings and sculptures from antiquity or the Renaissance, giving the viewer a certain sense of déjà vu. His works often have a sacred atmosphere; his interior paintings in particular are reminiscent of the lighting in a church context in their mostly dark surroundings, coupled with the punctual light sources. -
