The work depicts a rural winter scene set in Russia, the artist's homeland. In a village covered in snow, two figures on horseback and a horse-drawn cart enliven the foreground. The wooden houses with snow-covered sloping roofs, haystacks, and bare trees contextualize the simple and laborious life of the countryside. The atmosphere is brought to life by the sunset sky, which blends warm and cold glows.
