Description
"Symphony in Grey" is an iconic oil on canvas, modern art painting by the Hungarian born artist, Ferenc Varga (Hungary, 1906-1989).
Varga left Hungary for Paris in 1926 seeking artistic and cultural freedom of expression and became part of the movement known as the "Ecole de Paris" / School of Paris. In 1933 he showed at Galerie Bonaparte in Paris and travelled to Spain in support of the Spanish Resistance. In 1939 he fled the German invasion and settled in Cagnes-sur-Mer on the Riviera and became part of the local artistic Community which at the time included Jacques Prevert, Picasso (see photo), Andre Miguel, Pignon among many others. During this time he collaborated with Jean Cocteau on a book of poetry and other volumes (see photo below). After the war he had a large number of group and one man shows in France and abroad (Musee Picasso, Galerie C. Allendy etc.) He died in 1989 in Germany.
This oil on canvas abstraction is signed on the front, signed and dated 13.11.57 Cagnes sur Mer on reverse.

T. Thomas Gargiulo came from a dual background as a Ph.D. in Psychology with extensive training in Art History and Anthropology to form Thomas Gallery in downtown Manhattan in 1997 to balance intellectual with design pursuits. Since its inception the gallery has seen decorative arts as a vibrant representation of human culture of each age and as a portal to understanding it. P: 917.434.4032 E: thomasgalleryltd@gmail.com
