Max Neufeldt “Blue Bird Heart” Assemblage Collage, 1985
An original mixed-media relief by California artist Max Neufeldt, this 1985 “Blue Bird Heart” piece marries a hand-crafted bird figure on a perch with assorted found objects—all mounted to a stained wooden heart. Neufeldt’s signature blend of industrial remnants and warm materials evokes a poetic nostalgia, each element thoughtfully arranged to riff on themes of memory and craft. Signed “Neufeldt Santa Barbara” on the back.

About the Artist
Born in Sylvia, Kansas, and raised in Mount Vernon, New York, Max Neufeldt (1938–2025) earned his MFA at Pratt Institute before making his mark in Venice and Santa Barbara. Known for transforming everyday tools—scissors, graters, keys—into “quiet relics of a pre-digital age,” he exhibited at venues such as the Pasadena Art Museum and was featured in leading California design publications.
