Sacha Kolin Untitled (Abstract Acrylic on Canvas) 1964
-
Description
This sophisticated Mid Century Modern abstract acrylic on canvas painting was realized by the esteemed 20th Century French-American artist Sacha Kolin (1911-1981) in 1964. The composition offers color blocks of black and cobalt blue bifurcated in the center with a sinuously curved off-white band (suggesting a more organic interpretation of a Barnett Newman zip). This curvilinear line imbues the work with a subtle dynamism and drama. Serene, elegant and adroitly painted, this work would be a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Mid Century to contemporary. It comes presented in a custom gilded walnut gallery frame and is in excellent vintage condition. The work is signed "Kolin '64".
Sacha Kolin was born in Paris to a Ukranian Jewish family, and spent her childhood in Argentina and Hungary before settling with her parents in Vienna. Kolin trained at Vienna's School of Arts and Crafts and the Academy of Fine Arts before moving to Paris in 1933 to study under Naoum Lvovich Aronson. She exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1934 to 1936.
Fleeing Nazi persecution of Jews in nearby Germany, Kolin and her family emigrated to the United States in 1936, settling in New York City. Kolin soon began exhibiting her art at venues including Rockefeller Center as well as the 1940 World's Fair. Kolin was a longtime friend of artist Ray Johnson and an early member of his New York Correspondance School. Her work is collected internationally and appreciated for its unique (and compelling) aesthetic, and valuable contributions to 20th century abstract painting.
