Description
This signed David Webb lapis lazuli torsade style bracelet with a sculptural 18k gold setting and carved coral floral motif originated in the United States, circa 1970. A wide, multi-strand assembly of deep‑blue lapis lazuli beads forms a bold cuff that reads like an articulated band of uniform carved spheres. At the center sits an oval coral plaque intricately carved in high relief with a cluster of blossoms and foliage, the handwork emphasizing delicate petals and rhythmic negative space. The coral plaque is framed by a sculptural 18k gold mount composed of layered, textured leaf motifs that radiate outward and create dimensional contrast against the smooth beads. The immediate bezel is set with round brilliant cut diamond accents that lend scintillation to the composition and define the central focal point. The piece fastens with an integrated clasp concealed within the central mount, allowing the multi‑strand beadwork to drape cleanly on the wrist. The strong color contrast of saturated lapis, warm coral and burnished gold exemplifies David Webb’s bold use of color and form in 20th Century American fine jewelry .Excellent vintage condition. David Webb (1925–1975) was an American jewelry designer from Asheville, North Carolina, who founded his namesake New York firm in 1948 with financial backing from Antoinette Quilleret. His early training is described as practical rather than academic: sources variously note work with a metalworking uncle, jewelry repair, and time in the New York jewelry trade before the establishment of his own workshop. Webb’s mature design vocabulary is associated with large scale, sculptural volume, emphatic color, and a deliberate mixture of precious materials with a graphic, often playful sensibility. Auction and museum sources consistently identify animal jewels as central to his reputation, especially the zebra bracelet and other bracelets or brooches incorporating frogs, snakes, big cats, monkeys, elephants, and dragons. His materials and effects frequently include textured or hammered gold, enamel, diamonds, colored gemstones, cabochons, coral, jade, and carved rock crystal. United States, circa 1970
