Description
"Capriccio," 2026, 72" H x 108" W.
"Capriccio" is a monumental contemporary abstract painting by Argentine-born artist Karina Gentinetta, whose work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Frederic, House Beautiful, Veranda, The New York Times, and other leading design publications.
In Italian music, capriccio describes a composition characterized by imagination, spontaneity, and freedom of expression. These qualities also resonate with the dramatic contrasts, shifting rhythms, and emotional intensity associated with opera.
That same interplay of structure, intuition, and emotion is at the heart of this painting. Like a musical composition, "Capriccio" unfolds through contrasting rhythms—quiet passages of delicate drawing interrupted by bold gestures, energetic brushstrokes, and unexpected shifts in color. There is a sense of movement throughout, as though each mark responds to the one before it.
An expansive ground of warm ivory, soft cream, and pale stone provides the setting for layers of charcoal, graphite, and expressive painterly marks. Muted burgundy and Venetian red introduce moments of intensity, while dusty rose, blush pink, soft blue-gray, and touches of ochre create warmth and contrast. Some passages are subtle and almost whispered; others are immediate, confident, and full of energy.
The painting's richly worked surface reveals an ongoing dialogue between control and spontaneity. Lines overlap, gestures interrupt one another, and layers of color emerge and disappear, capturing the emotion and physicality of the creative process. Despite its monumental nine-foot width, the composition maintains a remarkable balance between expressive energy and open space.
This original large-scale mixed media painting is presented in a minimalist natural white oak floater frame.
Karina Gentinetta's work is distinguished by its richly layered surfaces, expressive visual language, and nuanced approach to color and composition. Her paintings have been featured in internationally acclaimed interiors and are held in private collections throughout the United States and abroad. Each original work reflects an ongoing exploration of memory, emotion, spontaneity, and the delicate relationship between control and artistic freedom.
