Description
An imposing oil on canvas of a merchant and his wife Portugal circa 1790. The painting features intricate details of the subjects’ attire and the serene landscape around them. The merchant is wearing a mustard-toned doublet with white lace collar, suggesting affluence and social standing. His wife wears a sumptuous navy gown accented with lace; her coiffure styled with pearls in a period-specific manner both indicative of her status. Notable is the tranquil pastoral scene in the backdrop, lending a sense of depth and context. An ornate urn with classical design is a nod to the tastes of the time. This piece is representative of late 18th-century Portuguese portraiture, displaying the sitters’ prosperity and the era’s aesthetic inclinations. Portugal circa 1790.
