Description
Walkowitz creates a powerful composition with the tightly cropped nude figure pushed up-close to the viewer and occupying half of the picture plane. Smaller figures lead the eye backward to a distant landscape. Browns and blue shapes alternate to create a simple and flat modernist composition. Provenance: Zabriskie Gallery. , Utah Museum of Fine Art, Abraham Walkowitz was an American modernist painter. Walkowitz was of Russian Jewish descent. He emigrated to the United States in his early childhood. Walkowitz worked closely with Stieglitz as well as Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and John Marin
