Description
Born in 1941, Alain Clément is a prominent figure in French contemporary abstraction. Working between Nîmes and Paris, the painter, sculptor, and printmaker has dedicated decades to investigating the interplay between colour, space, and volume.
After studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and training in printmaking at the historic Atelier 17 in Paris,Clément developed an approach where the flatness of the canvas is in constant dialogue with the physical weight of sculpture. While his compositions display an immediate gestural vitality, they are grounded in rigorous structural architecture. Clément's work is represented in major public and private collections, including a major donation to the Centre Pompidou.
In his works on paper, Alain Clément harnesses the rich, matte opacity of gouache to explore his signature dialogue between form, volume, and space with a profound sense of immediacy. Unlike the dense, edge-to-edge architecture of his canvases, these compositions utilize the unpainted white of the paper as an active, luminous spatial element. This negative space breathes light into the bold, interlocking ribbons and sweeping shapes, enhancing the dynamic tension on the surface.
Executed with confident, fluid brushstrokes, the gouache translates Clément’s physical energy directly onto the page. Whether utilizing vibrant, interlocking palettes (as seen in his 2022 series) or stark, contrasting gestures (as in his earlier 2014 and 2016 pieces), these works offer an intimate glimpse into the artist's spatial thinking. They perfectly bridge the spontaneous freedom of drawing with the structural weight of his larger paintings and steel sculptures. -
