Haitian Vodou Ceremony with Headless Man, Original Artwork Signed

Creator: André Pierre
Offered by: Robert Funk Fine Art

Description
The present work by Haitian Artist Andre Pierre depicts a Vodou ceremony led by a priest (oungan) to honor ancestors and connect with spirits known as lwa through drumming, dancing, and procession. The foreground shows a large fire flanked by a row of trees cut off at the trunk. In the lower right-hand corner, three dedicated drummers (ountogi) drive the ceremony with rapid, complex rhythms and call-and-response chants to build spiritual energy. Opposite the drummers, a headless man is shown. The dancers witness it as his detached head rises past an image of a cross and into a higher spiritual domain. Haitian Vodou is a rich, syncretic religion that blends traditional West and Central African spiritualities with Roman Catholicism. The work is signed lower right A. Pierre. The label on verso states, " Secret Ceremony. Framed by House of Heydenryk. Provenance: Collection Mark Seidenfeld, New York. Frame size 20.5" x 35.75"
