Description
View of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute from the Grand Canal by Arthur Trevor Haddon. Oil paint on wooden panel. Signed lower left, “Trevor Haddon RBA”. The Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) is a British art body established in 1823 as the Society of British Artists, as an alternative to the Royal Academy. The painting was executed circa 1890. Condition is very good, no issues. Provenance: Saint Petersburg, Florida estate. Framed in a period reproduction gallery frame in fine condition. Overall framed measurements are 20.5 by 16 inches.
Arthur Trevor Haddon was born on 22 August 1864 in London. He won a scholarship to the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art and enrolled in 1883. There, he studied under Alphonse Legros. He also studied with Hubert von Herkomer from 1888 to 1890.
Although he lived primarily in London and Cambridge, Haddon traveled to Rome, Madrid, Venice, California, South America, Hawaii, and Asia. He died in Cambridge on December 13, 1941, at age 77.
Baldassare Longhena's magnificent basilica is prominently positioned near the entrance to the Grand Canal, its white stones, exuberant statuary and high domes gleaming spectacularly under the sun. The church makes good on an official appeal by the Venetian Senate directly to the Madonna in 1630, after 80,000 Venetians had been killed by plague. The Senate promised the Madonna a church in exchange for her intervention on behalf of Venice – no expense or effort spared. - More Information
