Description
Antique Italian Orientalist oil painting of a mosque in Cairo by Lovatti
Italian, 1899
Canvas: Height 31cm, width 51cm
Frame: Height 40cm, width 61cm, depth 4cm
This is a very fine 19th century oil painting by Italian artist Augusto Lovatti (1852–1921), known for his captivating genre scenes, seascapes, and landscapes.
This particular artwork dated 1899 and signed in the lower right corner “A. Lovatti Cairo”, showcases a majestic Egyptian mosque as its central subject. Lovatti’s masterful brushwork highlights the intricate architectural features of the building, drawing the viewer’s attention to its serene yet imposing presence. A lone figure, robed in striking blue, stands in the foreground - its small scale serving to accentuate the structure’s grand proportions.
To one side, a cluster of palm trees with vibrant green fronds provides a vivid contrast to the clear, azure sky above. In the background, the soft silhouettes of additional buildings are just visible, subtly reinforcing the setting without detracting from the mosque’s visual dominance. The scene is composed in warm, earthy hues, a hallmark of Orientalist art from this period.
Elegantly presented in a painted frame, this antique painting is not only a testament to Lovatti’s talent but also a fine example of 19th-century European fascination with the East.
