Description
Perhaps the finest work of Aurel Richter's (Hungary, 1870-1957) career, this vividly-painted, Art Deco - Cubist view of central Budapest in the 1930s depicts the pinnacled Liberty Bridge, the sparkling blue Danube, and an energetic scene of crowded streetcars, streamlined automobiles, and the Hungarian parliament building, its windows casting light into the nocturnal air. Richter was known for his portraits and figural painting, so this expansive view of his native city is a spectacular exception. He trained under Karl Lotz and was known for illustration art as well as easel paintings. The medium is oil on board.
