Description
Bernardus Johannes (Bernard) Blommers 'Woman with Child' Watercolor, The Netherlands, Late 19th Century.
This truly is a magnificent and very touching work by the world renowned ‘Hague School’ artist Bernardus Johannes (Bernard) Blommers (The Netherlands, 1845-1914). Depicted is a tender and loving scene with a mother and child, beautifully painted with a free and impressionist touch. In this work the wonderful anecdotal qualities for which his work is so highly appreciated are very much present.
The work comes from a private collection and is on the market for the first time. Framed professionally.
About Bernard Blommers
Bernardus Johannes (Bernard) Blommers is one of the foremost artists of the ‘Hague School’, remembered for his ability to capture the gentle beauty of everyday life and the joy found in human connections.
The international appeal of Blommers' work brought him considerable fame during his lifetime. He participated in major art exhibitions abroad, and his reputation grew to such heights that, during a visit to the United States in 1904, he was invited at The White House by President Theodore Roosevelt. Later on he traveled back to the USA to paint a portrait of Andrew Carnegie. American collectors eagerly acquired his works, cementing his reputation across the Atlantic. His visit also inspired a deeper appreciation for Dutch realism, influencing tastes and sparking interest in the broader Hague School movement.
Blommers found inspiration along the coast around The Hague, where he became fascinated with the lives of fisherfolk. It was here that he befriended Josef Israels, another prominent artist of the Hague School. Although both artists drew from similar subjects, their interpretations diverged: Israels focused on the harsh realities of fishing life, while Blommers highlighted its tender, everyday moments.
Next to Israels, he also worked and lived among other famous Dutch artists like Hendrik-Willem Mesdag, Jacob Maris and Anton Mauve. Also Vincent van Gogh, who has been a follower and lover of the Hague School painters, knew Blommers personally and they both visited each others ateliers.
