Description
This work belongs to the ‘Color Orb’ series — a body of paintings that explore the orbital nature of perception through geometric abstraction. Though grounded in a square motif, each work behaves like an “orb” — not as a planetary form but as a field of visual and atmospheric intensity.
Conceptual grounding:
The nested squares in these works flirt with the familiar logic of Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square, but in Hallard’s hands, they are pushed toward a different purpose. Here, the structure is less about formal color relationships in isolation, and more about constructing a perceptual field that is both enclosed and leaking — suggesting something simultaneously held and expansive.
This push-pull — between containment and permeation — places these works within what can be described as a hyperobject aesthetic. The orbs operate not simply as flat forms, but as thresholds: perceptual engines that echo the environmental feedback loops of systems too vast to fully contain. The square, traditionally a symbol of order and control, becomes a stage for orbital drift.
Visual notes:
Color Orb presents a warmer resonance: acid green perimeter, gold-orange and black frame an airy cyan core. This pairing offers a reciprocal dialogue of temperature and intensity.
Relevance within the Orb series:
These square Orbs mark a pivot in the series — embracing rigid form not to contain meaning, but to refract it. As such, they invite the viewer to consider the work not as autonomous objects, but as perceptual events: open-ended, participatory, and vibrating just beyond the edges. -
