Description
Antique English figurative oil painting by Charles Spencelayh
English, c. 1900
Canvas: Height 53cm, width 37cm
Frame: Height 72cm, width 56cm, depth 7cm
Presented here is a captivating oil painting by the celebrated English artist Charles Spencelayh (1865-1958), renowned for his finely detailed portraiture and genre scenes in the Academic tradition.
Set against a modest village backdrop, the scene unfolds with an elderly woman caught in a moment of domestic upheaval. With a disapproving expression, she glares toward a spirited young boy who has just made off with a jug placed on her doorstep. In one hand, she holds a branch, poised as if ready to chase him down. Their simple, working-class attire reflects the social realism often found in Spencelayh’s paintings, capturing the essence of daily Victorian life.
A delightful kitten sits by the woman’s feet, its front paws neatly tucked, and a soft blue ribbon tied around its neck - a symbol of refinement and independence during the Victorian period, when cats gained popularity as household companions.
Subtle interior elements are softly suggested through the doorway, including a faint wall painting and a hanging sign that reads ‘[…] DONE HERE’, hinting at a domestic service once offered within. The cobbled path in the foreground, peppered with greenery, draws the eye toward the barrel and the departing child.
Painted in a harmonious palette of earthy neutrals, the composition is enlivened by restrained bursts of colour, most notably, the red hue of the woman’s blouse.
The work is signed ‘C. SPENCELAYH’ in the lower right corner and is beautifully presented in a finely carved giltwood frame.
It is an ideal acquisition for collectors of traditional English art or those seeking a characterful piece with narrative richness.
