Description
This is a very good example of late 18th/early 19th century Cuzco School painting of a Madonna Representing "Our Lady of the Rosary" (Nuestra Senora del Rosario). The painting depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus supported by cherubs with saints on either side. The painting is in overall good condition having been relined and framed in a 20th century gold leafed frame.
The painting follows the style of the Cuzco School (Escuela cuzqueña) - a Roman Catholic artistic tradition based in the former capital of the Inca Empire, Cuzco Peru during the Colonial period, in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It was not limited to Cuzco only but spread to other cities in the Andes, as well as to present-day Ecuador and Bolivia. The Cuzco style is known for its religious themes, absence of perspective, and vibrant colours, such as red, yellow, and earth tones, often accentuated with gold leaf. Most works were created anonymously due to communal art traditions. -
