  • Description
    Dale Nichols (1904–1995)
The Cradle, 1951, oil on masonite, 16⅝ × 24½ in.
Inspired by his admiration for Rockwell Kent, Nichols made his first trip to Alaska in 1937. There, he was awed by the Northern Lights and the effect of light on the mountains and sea, which he would continue to explore in his paintings over the next several decades. The subject of The Cradle relates to Rockwell Kent’s print Godspeed (1931–1932), which also shows a figure in the sky hovering above a ship.
