Description
Large antique Orientalist oil painting of a street scene by E. Jeel
Continental, 1894
Canvas: Height 139cm, width 113cm
Frame: Height 159cm, width 133cm, depth 6cm
Executed in 1894 by the artist E. Jeel, this richly detailed oil painting offers a vivid portrayal of life in a Middle Eastern city, capturing the charm and character of Orientalist themes that were highly sought after during the late 19th century.
The composition is anchored by a striking mosque, its towering minaret and high domes rising above surrounding buildings, which are rendered in gentle pastel tones. These soft pinks, blues, and creams introduce a vibrant warmth to the otherwise subdued setting. On the right-hand side, a series of distant architectural forms are painted in faded tones, creating a sense of perspective and atmospheric depth.
In the bustling foreground, the narrow-cobbled street is animated by various figures. Some rest beneath a canopy in the shade, while others carry baskets of fruit or clay jugs atop their heads, moving along the alley toward the open cityscape in the distance. All are depicted in authentic traditional dress, adding a strong sense of place and cultural identity.
Scattered pottery vessels dot the street, reinforcing the everyday nature of the scene. A central focal point is a man dressed entirely in white, seated proudly on a camel. The crisp whiteness of his clothing stands out brilliantly against the more muted backdrop, drawing the viewer’s eye immediately.
Above, a brilliant blue sky, flecked with soft pink and white clouds, enhances the feeling of heat and light typical of the region, further imbuing the scene with an unmistakable Middle Eastern atmosphere.
The canvas is signed and dated in the lower right corner ’E. Jeel 94’, and is housed in an ornate, carved giltwood frame that complements the richness of the work.
Provenance: Formerly part of the private collection of Dr. jur. Arthur F.J. Wurzbach von Tannenberg (also known as Ertogrül von Wurzbach). The painting was acquired in 1905 as a wedding gift to celebrate his marriage to Margit Rizzi. It was originally installed in the family residence, Höflein Castle (Preddvor), located north of Ljubljana, and has remained within the family’s possession ever since.
