English Regency Portrait, c. 1810
-
Description
This is a very good period Regency portrait of a young Regency-era dandy. The features of the subject match those of published Beau (George) Brummell depictions--especially the eyes, eyebrows, nose and chin. The painting was cleaned, restored and relined in the 20th century. There is a repaired tear at the bottom central-right of the painting. Although not signed, this is the work of a very skilled artist. The painting retains its original stretcher and gilt frame. The frame has a few minor areas of restoration, normal for a frame of this age.
**Beau Brummell was the most notable dandy of the early 19th century. In his youth Beau Brummell inherited a considerable sum of money and ran in the most elite eschelons of society. Sadly, he died at the age of 62 in a French paupers asylum. -
