Description
18164: Orientalist Oil Painting of the Alcázar of Seville by Enrique Roldán
Spanish, late 19th century
Canvas: Height 44cm, width 32cm, depth 2cm
Frame: Height 55cm, width 43cm, depth 3cm
This superb oil on canvas depicts a courtyard within the Palace of King Peter at the Alcázar of Seville, signed, dated and situated lower left ‘Enrique Roldan / 90 / Sevilla’. The composition is a virtuoso exercise in architectural precision and atmospheric observation, Roldán capturing the celebrated Mudéjar architecture of the Alcázar with extraordinary fidelity — the complexity of its carved stucco arcades, interlaced horseshoe arches, muqarnas vaulting and Kufic inscriptions rendered with the patience of a draughtsman and the sensitivity of a painter.
The upper registers dissolve into layer upon layer of geometric interlace, scalloped arches and honeycomb plasterwork in warm tones of cream and ochre, punctuated by vivid accents of blue and red decoration visible through the receding archways. The azulejo tilework dado running around the lower walls is rendered with exceptional care, its intricate polychrome patterns meticulously observed across every surface. The middle ground opens onto a receding sequence of arches and columned arcades, drawing the eye deep into the palace interior and conveying the remarkable spatial complexity of one of Europe’s most celebrated medieval monuments.
The foreground is animated by two carefully placed still-life elements: a large exotic plant in a painted Moorish vase and a richly coloured oriental rug spread across the pale stone floor, accompanied by a crimson cushion with gold fringe and tassels — an Orientalist detail of considerable charm and decorative appeal.
The Alcázar of Seville, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was substantially rebuilt between 1364 and 1366 when King Peter I of Castile commissioned Moorish craftsmen from Granada and North Africa to create a palace in the Mudéjar style, producing one of the most remarkable syntheses of Islamic and Christian artistic traditions in European architecture. Paintings of Andalusian interiors of this type enjoyed enormous popularity during the second half of the 19th century, produced for a sophisticated market of Grand Tour travellers and Orientalist collectors.
The work is presented in a later gilt and grey-painted moulded frame.
