Presentation in the Temple

$ 6,250
  • Description
    “And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord…”
    Luke 2:22–24

    A refined and intimate depiction of one of the earliest moments in Christ’s life, following his birth, the Presentation in the Temple. Painted in 17th-century Flanders, the scene captures the quiet solemnity of ritual, prophecy, and recognition.

    At the centre, the Christ Child is held by Mary as she presents him to Simeon, who raises his hands in reverent awe, acknowledging the fulfilment of divine promise. Joseph stands nearby, observing with quiet presence, while another attendant carries the traditional offering of two doves, as prescribed by Mosaic Law.

    The setting is a richly imagined temple interior, where architecture, gesture, and light combine to create a sense of sacred order. The contrast between humble offering and ceremonial grandeur is carefully observed, with the doves serving as a reminder of both Christ’s humility and the lived reality of the Holy Family.

    Candles placed within the composition reinforce the moment’s deeper meaning: Simeon’s proclamation of Christ as “a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.”

    Elegant in scale and devotional in tone, the painting distils a profound moment of recognition, when prophecy becomes presence.
