Francesco Netti, (Santeramo In Colle (Bari) 1832 – Naples 1894)

    Oil on panel

The work is accompanied by a study by Prof. Christine Farese Sperken

Francesco Netti spent almost fifty years of his life away from his family and his country of origin. In 1843, in Naples, he studied at the San Carlo alle Martelle college of the Piarist Fathers and in Naples he graduated in law. He took private painting lessons from Domenico Morelli and in 1855 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples ; he then continued his painting studies in Rome (1856-1859) and made educational trips to Florence, Turin, Venice, Padua, Ferrara, Bologna and Ravenna.

He became friends with artists, including Achille Carrillo, Giuseppe Bonolis, Tommaso De Vivo, Michele De Napoli, Adriano Cecioni, Marco De Gregorio, Giuseppe De Nittis, Federico Rossano, Camillo Miola.

During his long stay in Naples he joined the artistic movement of the School of Resina , founded in 1863 by Marco De Gregorio (1829-1876) and which had as members, among others, the Tuscan Adriano Cecioni, the Barlettan Giuseppe De Nittis, the Neapolitan Federico Rossano, Enrico Gaeta and the Sicilian Antonino Leto .

This group of painters, active in Naples from 1863 to 1867 – and more discontinuously until 1875 – opposed academicism, of which Domenico Morelli was a representative, and was oriented towards valorising the study from life, the precise and luminous representation of the urban and rural landscape, the careful observation of nature, the attention to the landscape and the effects of light: all aspects that Netti would make his own.
