George Fisher Daniels lived in Oxford, Massachusetts, near Worcester. He had wide-ranging interests; he was a shoemaker as well as a Historian and a painter. Daniels specialized in landscapes and panoramas like this Webster Lake panorama. His other subjects included Lake Champlain in Vermont and upstate New York, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and views of New Jersey’s Hackensack and Passaic Rivers and celebrated the beauty of America. Most of Daniels’ paintings were executed between 1866 and 1878. During his career he enjoyed great success and consorted with artists like Emil Carlsen, R. Swain Gifford and Winslow Homer. His paintings were included in exhibitions at the Boston Arts Club and at the National Academy of Design in New York City. The Worcester Art Museum has a painting from the previous year by Daniels in their collection.
Webster Lake is the second largest lake in Massachusetts, covers 1270 acres and has always been well-known for its fine fishing.
