Great 18th century French painting, Susanna and the Elders
-
Description
Splendid painting from the first half of the 18th century. Oil on canvas painting depicting a fascinating biblical scene, Susanna and the elders. A chaste woman is threatened by two elderly judges who blackmail her. The story will have a happy ending, however, Susanna will resist the elders who will then be unmasked and condemned. The painting has a plaque with the name Jean Baptiste Santerre (1651-1717), a famous French artist known for his refined elegance and marked sensuality. Painting of remarkable pictorial quality, probably a preparatory study for the original, of monumental dimensions and now exhibited at the Louvre in Paris (the artwork is not currently accompanied by an expertise, but it is possible to obtain it upon payment of the relevant additional costs). Carved and gilded wooden frame from the 20th century, with some signs of aging (see photo). Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and recoloring in small spots, overall in good condition. Interior size H 79 x W 47 cm.
