Description
HENRY MAIDMENT
English. fl. 1889-1914
Pastoral Landscape with Shepherd and Flock
Oil on canvas | signed with artist's monogram lower right (intertwined HM / 1900)
29 1/8" W x 17 1/2" H x 2 1/2" D [frame]
24" W x 12 1/8" H [canvas]
A richly painted pastoral scene by the English genre landscape painter Henry Maidment, the painting captures a shepherd driving his flock along a sunlit country path away from a thatched cottage nestled among mature trees. Maidment’s handling of light and atmosphere, especially in the warm tones of the sky and the soft haze of the distance, evokes the enduring Romantic attachment to the English countryside at the close of the Victorian period. The painting is monogrammed H.M. and dated 1900 lower right, housed in an early and perhaps original period giltwood frame with carved foliate ornament.
Maidment was active in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in rustic landscapes that often feature shepherds, flocks, and village cottages. These subjects deeply resonant with Victorian nostalgia for agrarian life amidst the pressures of industrialization. His works, though relatively rare, appear periodically on the market and are admired for their detailed brushwork and balanced compositions. He also painted under a pseudonym of Robert Fenson.
Condition: Canvas stable with only light craquelure across the surface. Very minor inpainting visible under UV. Painting has been carefully cleaned and sealed in traditional Dammar varnish by our conservator. Frame with scattered chips, losses, and old gilding repairs, stable and presenting well.
