Description
Large 19th century British Orientalist oil painting by Henry Lynton Stanton
British, 1890
Canvas: Height 51cm, width 76cm
Frame: Height 59cm, width 84cm, depth 5cm
This vibrant oil painting by British artist Henry Lynton Stanton (active 1886–1912) is a fine example of late 19th century artistic exploration of Middle Eastern culture. Known for his evocative depictions of daily life in the East, Stanton captures a vivid and immersive scene in this striking work.
Dominating the foreground is a dynamic assembly of figures dressed in richly coloured traditional garments. Some turn to meet the viewer’s gaze directly, creating an intimate connection, while others are portrayed engaged in routine activities. A particularly commanding presence is the man seated atop a camel, his direct stare suggesting a silent dialogue between viewer and subject.
In the distance, Stanton skilfully portrays a series of architectural forms that celebrate the elegance of Middle Eastern design. Detailed arched walkways, ornamental towers, and finely painted façades anchor the setting, situating the figures within a recognizable and atmospheric urban landscape.
To the left of the canvas, the perspective shifts. Fainter, more muted tones evoke a sense of depth and distance, where delicate palm trees and clusters of colourful foliage rise beneath a brilliant azure sky, flecked with soft, drifting clouds.
This artwork is housed in a finely carved giltwood frame and bears Stanton’s signature ‘H.S. Lynton (18)90’ along with Arabic script in the lower right corner.
Highly decorative, this stunning Orientalist painting makes an excellent addition to any art collection and adds a refined touch to both contemporary and traditional interiors.
