The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus

A richly detailed and highly narrative depiction of one of Christ’s most powerful parables, unfolding across three interconnected scenes within a single composition.

At the centre, a wealthy man feasts in comfort, surrounded by the signs of abundance and ease. Just beyond him, at the threshold of his gate, Lazarus lies in suffering and neglect, watched over only by stray dogs, longing for scraps from the table he is denied.

The upper register reveals the parable’s decisive reversal. Lazarus is shown received into Abraham’s embrace, while the rich man, now in torment, pleads in vain for relief. The contrast is stark, yet measured, reflecting not condemnation alone, but the moral weight of indifference.

What makes the painting particularly compelling is its clarity of storytelling. The earthly and the eternal are held within the same visual field, allowing the viewer to move between comfort and consequence, presence and aftermath.

Painted by Hieronymus Francken, a member of the renowned Francken family of Antwerp artists, the work reflects the Northern Renaissance tradition of densely populated, morally charged narrative painting.

Though the rich man is not described as wicked in the Gospel, his comfort is quietly set against Lazarus’s suffering, inviting reflection on compassion, attention, and responsibility.

Still resonant today, the parable remains disarmingly simple: how we see, and respond to, those in need defines far more than we might imagine.
