Oil on canvas painting by renowned Guatemalan painter Humberto Garavito portraying two colorfully attired gentlemen and a lady presumably indigenous residents of Todos Santos Cuchumatán at All Saint's Day, housed in a period painted and carved mahogany baroque style frame. Canvas measures 21.25" x 25.88" (53.98 cm x 65.74 cm).
Artist Biography:
Humberto Garavito Suasnávar (January 26, 1897, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala - June 1, 1970, Guatemala City) was a Guatemalan painter. He began his artistic training in Quetzaltenango, where he met Jaime Sabartés and was a colleague of Carlos Mérida . He continued his apprenticeship in the capital and then in Mexico City at the Academy of San Carlos, where he was a companion of Rufino Tamayo, Roberto Montenegro, and Miguel Covarrubias. He studied in Madrid, Spain in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and lived and exhibited in Paris in 1924 and 1925 and later in Germany, Spain, and the United States . He returned to Guatemala in 1927, and the following year was appointed the director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Guatemala City, a position he held until 1935. In 1958, the Guatemalan Government granted him the Order of the Quetzal. In 1960, Garavito was awarded an honorary diploma by the Humanities Faculty at the University of San Carlos de Guatemala. His works are held and exhibited by many museums worldwide. -
