Description
Beige ground lacquer with black and grey lacquer penguins with small pieces of shell making up white areas. Lacquer on wood. Writing reads: Lacquer Screen By Izumi Atsuhiko. It was shown in the National Nitten Exhibition 11 in 1955 (Showa 30). See copy of catalogue Nitten volume 18, page 498. About the artist: Izumi Atsuhiko (1915-2005) based in Nerima, Tokyo and later in Niigata Prefecture, Izumi Atsuhiko exhibited at the Hoshukuten (Special National Exhibition Held to Mark the 2,600th Anniversary of the Japanese Imperial House) in 1940 and, after the war, at the Nitten official national exhibition. A specialist in carved-lacquer decoration, he was a student of the renowned lacquer scholar Rokkaku Shisui (1867–1950) and mostly made wares for the tea ceremony.
