Description | Signed and Dated Lower Left Oil on Canvas 1834 Sight: 27 by 40 inches Overall: 35 1/2 by 48 inches The Reverse Inscribed: “Perspective View of R. Debevoise's Estate North Side Fulton Street, Brooklyn. Taken in the summer of 1834. Painted by J. Pringle in Linseed Oil on canvas prepared with English White Lead.” James Fulton Pringle was a marine, portrait and landscape painter born in Sydenham, England but worked primarily in Brooklyn. He studied under his father James Pringle and painted marine scenes for the British Admiralty before coming to the U.S. where he gained a strong reputation for highly detailed ship portraits, shipbuilding scenes, and scenes of marine disasters. |
