Janise Yntema’s practice is rooted in the mastery of wax-based media, ranging from traditional heated encaustic (beeswax and resin) to contemporary cold wax and oil stick techniques.
Her work on canvas paper and panel utilizes these materials to create a signature 'burnished' surface—a smooth, waxy skin that reveals subtle underpaintings and a quiet, internal glow. By layering pigment and wax with palette knives, Yntema captures the luminous, atmospheric quality of the natural world while maintaining a commitment to sustainable, organic materials.
Beyond the exquisite materiality of the wax surface, Janise Yntema is a highly collected artist whose works are held in the permanent collections of The Met and MoMA. As a Parsons School of Design Notable Artist, her work bridges the gap between mid-century abstraction and modern sustainability. Each piece is a masterclass in 'Eco-activism,' using organic beeswax and resin to document the earth's fragile beauty. -
