Following in the tradition of the early 20th century artists, Bonnard, Vuillard and Kees Van Dongen, Jean-Pierre Cassigneul creates beautiful compositions with great appeal. He is pre-eminently a figurative painter, though his range also includes flowers and marines.  The artist’s best known work is of women - alluring, beautiful, and graceful  women.  Often their eyes are heavily shadowed in green, creating an aura of mystery.  Those shadowed eyes are veiled in questioning silence.

In Cassigneul’s work the influence of Van Dongen, in his Fauve period, is clear.  It is perhaps from Van Dongen that Cassigneul learned the secret of the green shadows around the eyes and the iridescent quality of the skin, but Cassigneul’s freshness of tones, rich touch and glowing warmth are his own.  Cassigneul’s use of color conveys a sense of freshness and youth.  His preferred tones are the cooler shades of blue and green, with blacks and whitesagainst the brighter tones and outlining the figures and faces.  The models are usually presented alone and ful face, but at times he paints a model with her back to the viewer and by so doing succeeds in making her even more enigmatic.

Cassigneul was born in Paris in 1935.  He initially entered the Académie Charpentier, then decides to study under Jean Souverbie at Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and held his first one-man exhibition there at the age of 17.  His first private exhibition was at the Galerie Lucy Krogh, Paris in 1954. In 1958 he exhibition at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts, Paris and in 1959 was appointed member of the Salon d’Automne.  Since then, his work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe, Japan and the United States, including shows at the Galerie Tivey Faucon and Galerie Bellechase, Paris; Gallery Tamenaga, Japan and Wally Findlay Gallery, New York. Cassigneul has also illustrated several books, including Le Tour de Malheur by Joseph Kessel
