Tres Joan

Tres Joans series consists of lithographs and prints in which Miró explores his own first name—"Joan," the Catalan form of John—as a visual and artistic subject. Rather than simply signing his works, he transforms the letters into expressive graphic forms, blending writing, calligraphy, and abstraction. Tres Joans is typically characterized by a highly minimalist composition, bold, sweeping black brushstrokes, spontaneous calligraphic signs, a striking contrast between black and white, a sense of freedom and movement inspired by East Asian brush painting and calligraphy. The series is regarded as one of the most personal expressions of Miró's mature period, in which writing itself becomes a work of art.

Joan Miró (1893–1983) was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. A Catalan painter, sculptor, ceramicist, and printmaker, he developed a highly personal visual language that combined abstraction, symbolism, and poetic imagination. Born in Barcelona in 1893, Miró initially studied business before dedicating himself to art. His early paintings were rooted in Catalan landscapes and rural life, but after moving to Paris in the 1920s, he became associated with the Surrealists. Although he never formally joined the movement, his dreamlike imagery and spontaneous forms made him one of its leading figures. His mature style is instantly recognizable.
