Description
This painting is about the protectors I envisage for my Mokopuna (Granddaughter) Kimiora. The owl or morepork is a guardian for my family and the owl is depicted by the “Ruru” in a carved form, above her head. The petroglyphs talk of an ancient past and from where we all descend, and the tukutuku (woven panel) is depicted as a band of protection around her as she journeys through the hazards of her teenage years. I use gold paint in recent paintings to make them iconographic in a literal sense, in that if gold has a value and a worth, all my ancestors would be depicted as valued, iconic, powerful ancestors and if the symbolism can be ready by all cultures and creeds the understanding is implicit.
