Description
Title: "Arise," 2025" Artist: Kathi Robinson Frank Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 52 x 89 inches
A sweeping, museum-scale abstraction, "Arise" unfolds across the canvas with a sense of movement, renewal, and quiet revelation. Rooted in the artist’s own words, "greeting life with renewed vigor and hopefulness, daybreak arriving to my delight," the painting captures the emotional and visual essence of emergence, like the first light breaking across a landscape.
Kathi Robinson Frank’s process-driven approach is evident in the richly layered surface, where veils of color are built up, scraped back, and reworked allowing the history of the painting to remain visible within its final form. A luminous ground of warm neutrals: creamy whites, soft sand, and pale ochre, evokes the glow of early morning light, while passages of blush, muted coral, sage green, and hints of gold suggest the subtle shifts of dawn. The composition is anchored by bold, gestural strokes of deep umber and black that traverse the canvas like branching forms or calligraphic gestures.
These dynamic lines introduce a sense of structure and vitality, cutting through the softer atmospheric fields as if marking the moment of awakening. Drips, splatters, and incised marks further animate the surface, reinforcing the painting’s sense of immediacy and life. Balancing energy with serenity, Arise suggests fragments of landscape and memory without becoming literal—an abstracted horizon, a stirring of earth and sky, a quiet but powerful beginning.
The work invites contemplation, revealing new nuances of color, gesture, and light over time. With its expansive horizontal format and sophisticated, earthy palette, Arise serves as a striking focal point in any setting. It is ideally suited for a large-scale residential interior—anchoring a living room, dining area, or entry—or for a commercial environment such as a lobby, executive office, or gallery space. Both expressive and refined, the painting brings depth, movement, and a sense of optimism and renewal to its surroundings.
With its commanding scale, luminous palette, and expressive movement, Arise has the ability to transform any space from the ordinary to the extraordinary—infusing it with warmth, sophistication, and a striking sense of presence.
Born in New York City, Robinson Frank began painting early in life. As a teenager, she studied at the Art Students League before earning her B.A. from Bard College, where her artistic vision was shaped by the expressive lineage of Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Rauschenberg, and Larry Rivers. Her work has been exhibited widely across the Northeast and beyond, including the Provincetown Art Association, the Kleinert/James Center in Woodstock, the Bell Gallery in Rhinebeck and Woodstock, AMP Gallery in Provincetown, MA, and the Wired Gallery in High Falls, New York. Kathi has had solo exhibitions at PS 209 Gallery in Stone Ridge and at the Wired Gallery and participated in many group shows including one at the FirstDibs Gallery in Manhattan. -
