"Traveling," 2023 is a large abstract painting on canvas by Kathi Robinson Frank in acrylic, metallic paint and oil crayon. This exuberant work is symbolic of Life's journey-those taken and the ones that await us. In her own words, Kathi explains that "Traveling" reflects the life events we experience, the discovery of who we are and the attitudes we embrace along the way. This journey is reflected in a palette of luscious pale washes of white, blush, lavender and gray offset with bold areas of black, raspberry, pink, cobalt blue and metallic gold. Emotion and motion are enhanced by the artist's techniques. Kathi's uses spackling tools to lay the first surface on an unstretched raw canvas laid out on the studio floor. The canvas is then gessoed adding glazes white still wet. When the canvas is dry, Kathi then draws and paints using brushes, charcoal, pastels, rubbing, scraping and repainting. Like life's journey, the layered aspect of this painting evokes a complex and vibrant expressionistic narrative..
