Description
Oil on board painting by Lillian Chestney, American artist and well known illustrator. Circa 1965. Condition: Excellent. Signed lower right. Overall framed 25 by 31 inches.
American illustrator and painter Lillian Chestney was one of the female artists who worked for the famous Classics Illustrated series by Gilberton Publishing. Her luscious style lent itself perfectly for the rendering of the comic book adaptations of the 'Arabian Nights' tales (#8) and Jonathan Swift's first 'Gulliver's Travels' story (#16) in 1943. The artist had studied at the Pratt Institute and the Art Students League in New York City.
Chestney continued to work as an illustrator throughout the 1940s and 1950s. She later drew advertisements for cook books and music books, as well as covers for paperback romance novels. She drew mostly for children's books however, and also drew for magazines like McCall's, The Saturday Evening Post and Collier's. She was married to artist Stanley Maxwell. She died in 2000. -
