Loading the Wagon by William J. Scott (American, 1870-1940)

$ 3,500
  • Description
    This classic example of American Scene painting, depicting a group of four laborers loading the harvest onto a wagon amidst the fields, has the energy and dynamic of Thomas Hart Benton's famous mural paintings, and for good reason. The painter, William J. Scott, was a colleague and contemporary of Benton, and was highly influenced by Benton's paintings that depicted America's workers and industries with enormous energy and appreciation. The two painters were friends, and one of Benton's letters to Scott, asking if he could obtain several yards of canvas, survives and is owned by Kansas State University. This painting is watercolor on paper, and is signed in the lower righthand quadrant.
