Description
The present work is a Men's Magazine testosterone-charged gag cartoon showing twirling nude pole dancers. Surprisingly, they are seen turning up the heat at the Fire Station's fireman's pole that's across the street from their Nude Cabaret. In response to their erotic pole performance, the Firemen are depicted burning with desire.
Caption reads: "You guys are really sweet to let us practise over here". Published in Playboy Magazine, late 1990s.
Signed lower right, unframed.
This work is co-represented by David Lawrence Gallery, Beverly Hills.
Marty was a highly regarded and well-liked cartoonist. He was a long-standing contributor to Playboy and Cosmopolitan.
He worked extensively in animation…for a long time, at UPA on shorts and on Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, for which he was one of the main storyboard artists. He later contributed to a number of Hanna-Barbera shows including Hong Kong Phooey, Mumbly and especially Wait 'Til Your Father Gets Home, which was particularly designed in the Murphy style.
The last few decades, he was one of the privileged few gag cartoonists in the world to be published in Playboy. He was in almost every issue, often with the funniest gag. He stated "I have to be funnier than anyone else to stay in Playboy. I can't draw sexy women."
Marty was a master cartoonist who contributed regularly to Playboy and is probably best known for that work. But to animation fans his credentials are equally impressive.
Marty was a Production Designer on Mister Magoo in 1960, a Layout Artist on Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat, Character Designer on Wait Till Your Father Gets Home 1972 - 1974, and Hong Kong Phooey 1974. He was a Storyboard Artist on DuckTales, Garfield and Friends, Tom and Jerry: The Movie. -
