Description
Monumental Oil Canvas, Georges Henri Fauvel, Hunting Dogs with Master, 19th Cent
A very large and impressive painting hanging 139 by 89 inches having a group of finely detailed hunting hounds led by their master in the hunt. 19th century, relined. Signed lower right.
Born in 1890 in Havre (Seine-Maritime), France
He was a painter of animals, especially dogs- his breed of choice being Basset Griffon
Vendeen (Grand).
Throughout his life he won much acclaim and a special medal of recognition
at the beginning of his career.
Fauvel was a friend of Eugene Pechaubes 1890-1967 which can be seen in their subject matter and also their soft use of colour. Neither men used strong lines or hard angles- and both chose a composition that drew from a traditional way of painting- leaning towards impressionism but without giving up any detail and definition of the subject.
Publicly exhibited works include: “Chiens attendant le depart” (1904) and “Salles des gardes, chiens de Saint-Bernard,”(1909).
Book illustrations include “Le peintre et l’animal” E. Hardouin-Fugier page296
