Description
This charming portrait of a young seated woman from 1926 was most likely done in Paris. It incorporates broad areas of flat vibrant color that speak to the influence of Matisse and Fauvism. Yet clearly, the American Morgan Russell was a profound thinker and innovator in his own right. Along with Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Russell was a founder of Synchromism. This was the seminal non-representational art movement that began in 1911. It paved the way for a logical progress to abstractionism in art for years to come. Rothko, Pollack, de Kooning and Kline whose paintings fetch seven figures and more all owe a debt to Morgan Russell who preceded them by 25 years.
Condition: Scuff mark that extends from the neck to the right side and is approximately 2 inches from canvas edge. Secondary scuff / scratch of about 3 inches lower right shoulder. Third minor scuff parallel with sitter’s right eye about 3 inches in length. Otherwise in overall good condition. Canvas is relined. -
