Original oil paint on board painting of crashing surf on the Carmel, California rocky coast by the American National Academy artist, Paul Dougherty. The painting is signed by the artist lower right, “Dougherty”. Circa 1935. Condition is very good; no. Colors are bold and vibrant. The painting retains its original thick wood frame with antique finish. Overall framed measurement size is 23 by 29.25 inches. Provenance: A Miami, Florida estate.

Paul Dougherty (American 1877-1947)
Paul Dougherty was born in Brooklyn, NY, on Sept. 6, 1877. Dougherty graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in
1896. He then studied law and passed the New York State Bar examinations in 1898.
However, having been artistically inclined from an early age, he chose an art career instead of law. His art studies began at the Art Students League in New York City under Robert Henri and continued in London, Paris, Munich, Venice, and Florence. Returning to the United States in 1905, he settled on the coast of Maine and was elected a member of the Nat'ional Academy in 1907. Arthritis forced him to seek the milder climate of Arizona in 1928. He was world-famous when he made his final move to California in 1931. There he would continue painting the coastal scenes which had brought him fame.
After settling on the Monterey Peninsula, Paul Dougherty established a studio in Carmel Highlands and spent winters in Palm Springs until his death on Jan. 9,
