This pair of Orientalist panels by the brothers Eugène and Philippe Pavy captures everyday street and market life in North Africa, dated 1888 and 1890. The first scene is inscribed by the artist as set in Algiers. Both works share a warm palette of ochre, cream, and soft blue, with whitewashed buildings, strong sunlight, and deep shadow conveying the North African setting. White doves appear in both scenes, a quiet detail set against the busier street activity.
The first panel, painted by Eugène Pavy in 1888, shows a narrow Algiers market street crowded with figures in traditional dress. A seated vendor in red sits beside a trader examining a piece of woven fabric, while fish, baskets, and a brass vessel are laid out for sale nearby. Further figures, including a man carrying a large container, recede into the shaded alley beneath hanging awnings, giving the scene depth and a sense of daily activity.
The second panel, painted by Philippe Pavy in 1890, shows a public well, probably in North Africa. A woman in a rose-coloured robe fills a green earthenware jug, while a man seated on a laden donkey operates the pulley above the well. A third figure in white stands nearby, with surrounding buildings and archways setting the scene.
Both panels are signed and dated, the first lower left "Eug. Pavy. 1888. Alger." and the second lower right "Ph. Pavy / 1890", and are held in matching ebonised wood frames, each with a retailer's label to the reverse for Fredrick W. Thom Limited, Toronto.
Eugène Pavy (French, 1850–1905) and Philippe Pavy (French, 1860–1920) were brothers and Orientalist painters who travelled through North Africa, recording the streets, markets, architecture, and daily life of the region, including Algiers. Their work belongs to the wider 19th-century French Orientalist tradition, which sought to capture the atmosphere, people, and customs of the places its practitioners visited, a market that grew from the mid-19th century as French colonial expansion in North Africa fed European demand for scenes of Maghrebi life. The Toronto retailer's label on the reverse of each frame points to the pair's early-twentieth-century circulation through the Canadian art trade.
