Description
Robert Salmon (American/Scottish, 1775–1844)
Man O’ War Off Liverpool
Signed with artist’s initials and illegibly dated ‘R.S. 18**’ bottom right, oil on canvas
Canvas: 22 x 32 inches
Frame: 28 x 37 3/4 inches
Considered a leading figure in early American marine painting, Robert Salmon was born and raised in Cumberland, England, and trained in the British School to study technique and skill in marine painting. Salmon’s stylistic work had a lasting effect on Fitz Henry Lane, A.T. Bricher, and William Trost Richards, among others - artists who shaped the Luminist style that is so highly regarded today.
CONDITION:
The relined and restretched painting is very good condition. Examination under UV light reveals light restoration along the top outer edge of the canvas. Localized dots of inpainting also visible along the bottom outer edge of the work. The boat and the cityscape are intact. With light (hairline) craquelure throughout. A remarkably fine state of preservation. -
