Description
Large antique German 19th century Alpine waterfall landscape by Rudolf Giffinger
German, Late 19th Century
Canvas: Height 101cm, width 74cm
Frame: Height 139cm, width 112cm, depth 14cm
This dramatic Alpine painting by Rudolf Giffinger (German, 19th Century) showcases the artist’s assured approach to mountain scenery and his ability to convey the grandeur of the natural world. Giffinger’s landscapes are marked by their strong sense of atmosphere, refined tonal balance, and the interplay of rugged terrain with serene light.
In this evocative depiction of a Swiss waterfall near Bern, a torrent of water surges between great rocks before disappearing into shadowed woodland. A traditional chalet stands beside the flow, providing a quiet human presence amid the surrounding wilderness. Rising behind the scene, pine forests and distant pale mountains create a layered depth that draws the viewer into the composition. The soft glow of the moon above, combined with cool hues of blue and green, gives the painting a tranquil, slightly wintry mood. Giffinger renders the textures of water, stone, and foliage with impressive clarity, while the mist and atmospheric haze add a Romantic sense of space.
The work is housed in a magnificent giltwood frame, richly decorated with fruit, foliage, and scrolling ornament. Its scale and craftsmanship enhance the drama of the painting itself. The reverse bears a framer’s label and an inscription identifying the subject as “Wasserfall in Bern / Schweiz.” The signature “R. Giffinger” appears at the lower right, together with a partial 19th century date.
With its grand proportions, beautifully handled lighting, and compelling subject, this landscape stands as a fine example of Romantic Alpine painting and an eye-catching centrepiece for any interior.
