Description
Like his contemporary, Raoul Pene du Bois, Waldo Angelo served as an important designer for Broadway productions over decades, but in his private time, he produced a number of beautiful and striking paintings with male figures, many nude or partially nude. This is the largest and most ambitious example we've seen, the nude Pan figure playing his pipes and framed by the fresh greens and pinks of Spring. He is both man and goat, his torso morphing into a pair of human legs and goat legs that are overlapping and merging below. Angelo was a costume designer for productions such as Ziegfeld Follies, Wonderful Town and Call Me Madam, often as an assistant to du Bois. This painting was sold by The Brownstone Gallery in Brooklyn, which seems to have been a short-lived gallery that left no trace of its existence. The painting is watercolor and gouache, and is signed in the lower left hand corner.
